Hello, greetings to one and all. This is Jack Lookman welcoming you to our series:
Today's topic is:
Do You see that Picture Differently?
My mentee was posted to Northern Nigeria for his National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) after qualifying with a Honor's degree in Engineering. He was posted to teach English in a Nursery and Primary School.
Firstly, let me tell you a bit about Femi. He's God-fearing, woman loving, water drinking and into book reading, etc.
He self sponsored his education after the demise of his father. He did a lot of teaching as a side hustle to fund his education as well as for his survival.
His teaching methodology was more of manual, with a little bit of semi-automation. When I asked him casually about his place of NYSC primary assignment, he became emotional and distressed. The assignment given to him was much below his expectation. There were language challenges where the children understood only Hausa. There were no computers or digital devices. Though he has teaching experience—but this was not with little children. He moaned about his situation and was considering finding alternatives. He also moaned about the long nine months left for him to endure his situation. Another thing to mention is that Northern Nigeria is very far away from his home. As part of my counsel to him I mentioned that he could perceive the half glass of water either as half full or as half empty. Indeed, there are challenges but challenges usually come with opportunities and if the opportunities are well harnessed, they could result in prosperity.
Let's explore some of the opportunities:
- He could learn Hausa Language; this could open doors for him if he positively impacts the children. And the school may benefit him sooner or later.
- He could create digital learning products on platforms such as social media.
- Membership sites or platforms such as udemy.com, etc could be leveraged. If he doesn't have the funds, he could find investors or collaborate and leverage a Profit Sharing Formula
- He could also explore crowdfunding to raise any required funds.
- The products he creates could outlive him and become ever-green.
- He could earn passive income for life, and this could open further opportunities.
- Building on the success of this, he could create similar others.
- He could create ebooks.
- He could have a blog.
- He could have a podcast
- Etc
- He could create strong and effective foundations for impact and efficiency.
- He however needs to change his mindset from seeing it as a problem to seeing it as an opportunity.
What are the suggested processes?
Firstly, find an app or suitable platforms to learn basic Hausa. If there's none, that makes an additional business opportunity. Find alternative ways to learn the Hausa language. Collaborate with similar others; Teachers, Content Creators, Entrepreneurs, Fundraisers, Translators, etc.
Create videos during the teaching process or collaborate as necessary; or devote time and effort to doing this independently.
The video could complement the learning process for the children who only speak Hausa.
You need to prioritize the content by doing the most relevant ones.
Involve and incentivize stakeholders. Tell the Head Teacher what your challenge and intentions, are; and make suggestions on your proffered solution.
Package your business plan, seek investors or engage in crowdfunding. Your business plan shall have financial and other details. Part of the funding will be for digital gadgets for use in the school.
Your collaborators may be within or outside the school, or both.
Prior to all this you need to have done your research which includes product research, market research, competitor research, etc.
If the project is viable, this shall encourage you, collaborators and investors. You could undergo the project in your spare time.
Give yourself realistic targets and leverage a team of volunteers or suitable others. If this project yields results or makes an impact, then in addition to making impact you could make passive income for life.
Some threats, worthy of note, are:
- resistance to change
- access to digital devices by pupils
- funding
- administrative lapses
- fraud
- sabotage
- theft
- damage of devices and infrastructure
- intentional destruction
- technical issues
- viruses
- etc
Funding
This could be, via:
- government
- philanthropists
- non governmental organisations
- crowdfunding
- etc
In conclusion
Do you see that picture differently? Is the primary assignment more of a challenge or is it an opportunity? Do you run from life's problems and challenges? Or do you leverage the opportunities that they present?
Thank you very much for your time. I hope that you got some value.
